Air Exchange Rates in Differently Sized Rooms

Any air cleaner can only be effective if it filters a sufficient amount of air in an indoor environment. For general air cleaning purposes the IQAir device should be able to filter the room air volume at least twice every hour on the selected fan speed to achieve a significant air quality improvement. If the intensity of the pollution source is high or a high degree of purification is needed, more air changes may be necessary. In order to achieve the desired number of air changes, more than one air cleaner may be required.

The number of air changes that are necessary to attain a certain level of indoor air quality will depend on a variety of factors, including:

- intensity of air pollution source: The higher the rate at which air pollutants are produced or enter the indoor environment, the higher the air cleaning rate in the room needs to be.

The high speed settings also provide you with the additional air cleaning power to deal with situations of elevated air pollution levels (i.e. after vacuuming, dusting, changing bed sheets in a room you have a higher level of dust in the air and want to remove it quickly before it settles down) As the IQAir is quite loud on the high settings you will use those high fan speed settings only if you are not in the same room.

- filtration efficiency for specific air pollutants: The lower the filtration efficiency for certain pollutants, the more air changes are required to reduce these pollutants.

- desired improvement of air quality: The higher the desired improvement in air quality, the more air changes are required.

Determining Air Changes per Hour (ACH)

The number of air changes per hour (ACH) produced by an IQAir device in a specific environment are calculated as follows:

hourly air delivery of the IQAir device (cu.ft./h) = air changes per hour
air volume of the room (cu.ft.)

Air delivery rate of the IQAir HealthPro Air Purifier model depends on the speed setting

Speed 1 = 45 cubic feet / minute
Speed 2 = 75
Speed 3 = 115
Speed 4 = 145
Speed 5 = 180
Speed 6 = 260

Example calculation: A room with the dimensions of 13 x 13 x 8.5 feet has an air volume of 1436.5 cu.ft. With an air delivery rate of 115 cfm (6900 cu.ft. per hour) the room air volume will be circulated about 5 times per hour through the IQAir device. (6900 cu.ft. / hour : 1436,5 cu.ft. = 4.80 ACH)

If you provide us with your room measurements and the layout of the rooms you want to clean we can help you determine exactly how often the IQAir will exchange your indoor air (contact information).
